Over the years, Bollywood beauties have made their presence felt for their memorable or cringe-worthy appearances at the prestigious Cannes International Film Festival. The pressure of leaving an indelible sartorial mark in this high fashion event is immense and sharing Aishwarya Rai and Sonam Kapoor’s burden this year is Katrina Kaif who makes her first ever appearance at the French Riviera. This has gotten all of us uber excited!
As the Cannes 2015 red carpet has been rolled out, we’ll be covering our Desi celebrities as well as some fashionable Hollywood stars who’ll be gracing the event. Watch this space as we’ll be updating it regularly!
Katrina Kaif in Milly
Ms. Kaif made her debut appearance in a black and white sheer panel look from Milly Spring 2015 collection and let’s say we aren’t disappointed! It’s a perfect combination of sexy, chic and sophisticated which is just right for a press meet. Adding some fun amount of spunk and zing was her red hair. Win!
Katrina Kaif in Oscar De La Renta
Lo and behold! The moment we’ve been waiting for with bated breath (slow week at work, yes) is here…Katrina makes her first Cannes red carpet appearance on the opening night in an Oscar De La Renta gown.
And boy are we underwhelmed or what.
To be fair, she did warn us well in advance that she won’t be turning the fashion world upside down with extraordinary appearances but this look is too safe, boring and dated. The gown makes her look like she’s well on her way to turning into an ostrich. Neck-up she looks gorgeous (working that tan after all the sun-bathing earlier!) but overall, the look doesn’t pack a punch. Surprising, since she was styled by Anaita Shroff, the Fashion Director for Vogue India magazine. Hmm. Fly away Ms. Kaif before the fashion police gets you. Would’ve helped if you hadn’t chosen to be a flightless bird.
Katrina Kaif in Elie Saab
After donning a monochromatic palette on day 1, Katrina gave us oodles of red in an Elie Saab gown the following day. A little too much for our liking.
Again, the look is safe and doesn’t push the fashion envelope but there’s no denying that she looked great. Perhaps, a bold eye make-up or a different hair-style might have added some pizzazz. She might not quench the thirst of everyone but there’s a restrained elegance in her appearances that stays true to her simplistic style. Since it’s her first Cannes outing, lets say she fared quite well.
Let’s take a moment to absorb the fact that her appearance this year didn’t involve any theatricality or outing of the twins.
This year, she surprised us and cleaned up her act.
And that’s pretty much everything we have to say about her appearance.
Nandita Das in Anavila
India’s presence at Cannes wasn’t all glitz and glamour. Nandita Das, who previously served on the prestigious jury, was there to attend a panel discussion. The earthy beauty wore a simple saree that seemed like a breath of fresh air. While she looked absolutely beautiful wish she had picked a more striking saree!
Sonam Kapoor in Abu Jani & Sandeep Khosla
That much anticipated moment had finally arrived! Sonam might not always get it right but she sure knows how to keep everyone eagerly awaiting!
The hair, blouse and jewellery (Suhani Pittie <3) were all beautiful but the ruffles and the drape made the look a little too busy. We can’t make out what exactly is happening but we’re sure we don’t like it too much. But, thankfully, Sonam still has moments left for redemption!
Sonam Kapoor in Ralph & Russo
And she does! Sonam does redeem herself from the previous appearance and boy, aren’t we glad we patiently waited! The dress, luscious hair, the jewellery and the SHOES, were flawless!
Her eyes seemed dark and tired but we get it, pulling off this kind of glamour is a lot of effort! Kudos to you and Rhea for this!
Is it just me, or are all the Bollywood L’oréalites flaunting hair in shades of red?!
P.S. We’re not complaining!
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in Sabyasachi
Oh no, she didn’t! Yes, that was our first thought at the sight of this.
It pains us to agree with the world that describes this more as a curtain than a dress. Matching, long jacket? I can give you a 100 ways to discard excess fabric than that! Sorry Ash, this one is a fail! But, your face looks radiant as always and we’ll conclude with that.
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in Elie Saab
The Cannes Film Festival for us Desis is undeniably incomplete without Aishwarya Rai’s grand entry to the Red Carpet!
It’s hardly a surprise that Aishwarya picked an Elie Saab gown since she has adorned his creations many a time at Cannes before. But what left us disappointed was the choice of the gown. This has to be one of the least impressive gowns in a stellar Ellie Saab rack that was probably at her disposal.
What worked for her though was the gorgeous teal colour and the flawless make-up that did complete justice to one of God’s best created faces.
Her gown sure left us desiring for more drama but the Cannes veteran sure brought her best diva game to the red carpet.
Let’s hope she’s saving the best for the last. Wishful thinking? 😉
We asked for a more striking saree and we sure got it! Nandita Das looked ravishing in a black and pink silk saree that provided a welcome respite from all the gown sightings. The silver jewellery accessorised the look perfectly. Such a simple, earthy vibe.
Sonam Kapoor in Ashi Studio
Sonam made us take notice of her appearances even off the red carpet! We couldn’t help but cover this exquisite piece of couture dress by Ashi Studio that she wore to a book launch event at Cannes.
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in Georges Chakra
This girl is sure on fire and flauting away this beautiful beautiful gown! Her hair is now very déjà vu but everything else was just so flawless! Georges Chakra, we didn’t quite know about you, but we’ll be watching now! Bravo!
Aishwarya Rai in Ralph and Russo
Moments after the above appearance, Aishwarya made another round on the red carpet!
We’re assuming they ran out of time so left the hair as it is but we can’t help but want more.. The voluminous dress, the make-up, the hair, they are all just ‘okay’.
Sonam Kapoor in Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla
Her first look from the designers may have failed to seal the deal but THIS, Fabulous!!!
As the background suggests, she hit the Chopard party and looked nothing short of perfect!
Smokey eyes and nothing much else was the best pairing with the dramatic dress she had on! Fly away you lovely butterfly!
Sonam Kapoor in Elie Saab
Forgive us, but we do not follow this feathery trend that seems to haunt us at Cannes! Why Sonam, why?! Just when we called you perfect, you walked out in this! And it seems more like the dress was wearing her instead. This year was Elie Saab’s year but the Desis sure chose the most disappointing picks out of them all.
On a very positive note, the face was amazing, was it not? The lovely pink drops complimented her pink lip tone and the pulled back hair didn’t hide how happy she looked. She sure does make us believe the quote : “A smile is the best makeup any girl can wear”.
Richa Chadda in Gauri & Nainika
This beauty had huge success at Cannes for her performance in Masaan and she doesn’t disappoint on the red carpet either.
We’re not wow-ed by the eye makeup but everything else is just fabulous!
Aishwarya Rai in Elie Saab
We won’t blame you if you too are grappling with a sense of déjà vu. Strapless/Sleeveless gowns (Elie Saab is a clear favourite), open wavy hair, coloured eye-liner and those Chopard earrings seem to be her red carpet go-tos. Oh how we wish she mixed and experimented a little more 😦
But, we’ll forgive her for giving us a lovely colour palette this year, a great departure from last year’s muted/nude colours.
Donning a couple extreme outfits, she sure knew how to rock them both.
Spunky dress with boot heels and earcuffs and side pulled hair, she’s a total rock diva! The role might be serious but she knows how to add some fun into everything else.
This look was followed by a very ethnic and electric toned saree! Simple hair, minimal makeup and a wide smile were the ideal enhancements and she needed nothing else.
Mallika Sherawat in Georges Hobeika
If you thought she was done, viola, she’s not. She gave us back-to-back appearances in Georges Hobeika.
One is a blue strapless, full-length gown that we thought was merely ‘meh’. But she worked the cameras like no one else and for that, we upgrade her to a B+.
Unfortunately, what is to follow disappoints. She wore a white, elegant and regal looking dress which managed to look trashy with her hair and makeup.
We’re guessing she wasn’t feeling the look either since her usual wide smile had thinned to an almost pursed lip smirk.
Vishakha Singh in Raw Mango
Another earthy beauty that walked with an ethnic ensemble complete with a tilak.
